yes, gears will help-out alot but stay away from the so-called "shift-kits" and just do the Jerry-Mod to the trans and get yourself some subframe connectors installed as they should be the very 1st mod done to ANY Mustang

What is jerry-mod, never heard of it. Is it hard to do and what about cost? what is so bad about shift kits. I figured I could shift from 2nd to 3rd gear alot faster and smoother with it.
If you have a better way though I'm all for it.
Hit me back

do a google search for "J-mod" or "jerry mod" and you'll sea...Jerry was a Ford "drivetrain" Engineer before he and Chris Johnsom formed SCT a few years back.....

Is getting gears installed a big job? how much money can I expect to pay? I know the gears themselves run for a couple hundreed bucks, but what about labor.
Also I'm thinking about supercharging it and I read somewhere that you shouldn't install gears if you plan to supercharge it. Can you give me your opinion on this?
Thanks

I paid around $200 for my gears to be installed. A lot of people on here seem to pay bout the same, anywhere from 200-300. If ya plan on supercharging it, dont go to high, the highest id go with is 3.73 gears, which i have and still have problems hooking up. And that might be a lil much for some people. But some guys on here have superchargers and have 4.10's.

I Just had 3:73 put in my 2006 gt and it pulls much harder. The cost was 750.00 total. I had the US Race gears installed and they made noise at first now they have quited a lot. I would go with Ford Racing if you want quiet they are also made by US GEAR.

is there anything that someone should know when geting a rear end installed like any extra parts we should buy?

Yup yup! Definitely will make a noticeable improvement in acceleration. I had 3:73's in both my 87 and my 90. Its a little hard to hook up though, even with big, wide tires.

As far as additional parts go, I would have the clutch packs replaced when you change the gears. Those puppies tend to go out pretty quick. You're mechanic can tell you how they look and if they need to be changed once they take the rear dif apart.

Go with Ford racing gears. They are the cheapest and they are made by Ford engineers. I never had a problem with mine.

you'll atleast need the rear pinion bearing and race, pinion seal, axle shaft seals and a crush sleeve....if the car has over 30k, you'll prob need all the bearings in the rear, pinion seal, crush sleeve, axle shaft seals and a new pinion nut....if the car has 60k or more or your putting in new axles, you'll need new axleshaft bearings too....so for a gear change, it can run anywhere from @$200.00 to over $600.00

Dude You Rock, Thanks for your advice. I have 47k on my car so I would most likely have to do all you mentioned. I love this site. Its real nice to have some info before just diving into a project. So yeah I will definately look into all of it and get whatever I need done.
Would installing a clutch kit at the same time be a good idea?

How does that kennebell treat you. That thing must go like hell on that 04. I like the kennebell kits, thats what I want to do.
If it was'nt for the funds I'd have one already.
The problem is what do you do with all that power? You can only drive 65 and with a kennebell you must get there pretty quick. Yeah I know its the addiction of it, though it's more like a sickness thats what the wife says.

Yeah i love the kenne bell, and like ive said before, its worth every penny if your looking to get one. Yea it gets up to 65 really quick (even if your spinning), and then you'll look down and your into the 3 digits haha. But its loads of fun and crazy to drive. I try to go he speed limit as much as possible, but there is a time and a place to use it, and i go there a lot lol.

Ive raced a 03 stock cobra from a light to about 100mph, got him by about 2 1/2 lengths if not more pretty easily, its hard to tell sometimes. And ive raced a modded one (extremely loud but mods unknown) and it was about even, he may have had almost a fender on me.

My mechanic told me not to install 3:73 gears unless I just plan on taking it to the track. He also said that it would cut my gas milage in half and it would cut my top speed down to 120 MPH. I'm not too concerned with the speed thing since I only care about 0-100MPH, but does it really cut gas milage in half. can someone comment on this??Anyone?

No it doesnt cut it in half. You will only lose like 2-3 mpg, which isnt too bad. Now after you supercharge it, you feel like you have cut it in half. I get about 12-15mpg in city, bout 21 highway.

Sounds like your mechanic needs to do some studying. I have 3.73's on my car for more than a year and I'm very happy. Gas mileage actually increased a little, and I've had the car well over 140mph without nearing redline. Look at it this way, your motor spins a little faster at a given speed, but it reduces to power needed for that speed, its like increasing leverage, a bit more complicated, but that's the gist. It is hard to hook up though, and I only have bolt-ons, natural aspirated, no cam, heads or such. Mod motors like the little higher revs, and it really wakes the car up, one of the first mods anyone should do.

how big of an increase are we talking about? I read that 3:73's would cut 1/4 mile times by 4-5 tenths is that for real? is that alot? i really want to know that I've really done something to my car.
