I went in for an oil change and they called me even though I was right out front and said that the mechanic was recommending a rear differential fluid change based on hours and miles. I asked if it was leaking and they said no, it was just based on hours and miles.

When I get the car back and flip through the paperwork, I notice that they put in that the rear diff is leaking and they recommend a rear pinion seal change and fluid change to the tune of $190.

Now I've seen the other threads and it appears that it is not completely uncommon and was mostly due to being overfilled and not a bad seal anywhere.

So why would the dealership mark down it's a leaking seal and that it needs to be replaced if they should have the TSB or info from Ford about the overfill issues?

And why try to get me to pay for something that should be covered under warranty in the first place if it's just a seal that's gone bad?

I got my car first week of October 2013, and don't drive it particularly hard mostly just to and from work and it has a just a couple over 15,500 miles on it.

I declined the service because because needing rear diff fluid change for "miles and hours" sounded like a load of BS with such low miles on the car and for one of these rear ends.

There's NO WAY a 2013 with only 15K on it is anywhere close to needing the diff fluid changed, total BS on the dealer's part.

And you can tell really quick if the pinion seal is leaking, just crawl under and look, if it's leaking there will be a drop of fluid at the bottom of the seal. If it is leaking then that is a warranty issue and should not cost you anything but your time to get it fixed by the dealer. Drivetrain warranty, which includes the differential, is 5 years, 60K miles.

That's what I thought. No matter what the issue is the leak should be warranty based on what the other threads said was their issues, even if it turns out to be a seal.

And my original post should say October 2012 when I got the car, not 2013.

my 2012 gt had a leaking pinion seal at 10k miles. Just bring it in and they'll warranty it.
That's the thing, they tried to charge me $190 to have it serviced.

I would avoid this dealer. I would tell them why (if you don't tell them they won't have a reason to change) but I would avoid them in the future. Yes it's wtty but no reason at all just to change at a time mileage like yours

I got the e-mail from them asking me to rate the service. Gave them some negative points for the whole issue below and detailed it for them from what was told to me at the time and what I've found out afterwards from the info on here. They called me a few hours later and apologized for the mistake and told me that I was correct and it is under warranty and to bring it in when I get a chance and they'll make the repairs, and they had thought they had the miles written down wrong when the tech recommended it. Looks like a case of just one hand not giving the other hand accurate communication causing a misunderstanding.

It's gonna have to wait until next week when I will have time to leave the car there, but looks like it should be getting resolved. :)

I just had a funky issue with my rear differential. My car was vibrating around 70-80MPH and it took Ford's engineers to figure out that the pinion was bad in the rear differential so they had to take it apart and replace it. Hopefully you're not having that issue.

Let me know when you bring it in, Rodimus_Prime. I’ll escalate it if needed.
