I have a 2002 Ford Mustang V6 5-speed with roughly 140,000 miles. A few days ago while driving to work my heater stopped blowing warm air. I watched my temperature gauge and it never moved. A few seconds later it came back on. My commute to work is about 20 minutes. In this time it went out a few more times ending up with no warm air and finally temperature gauge starting to rise. It got almost to "H" before I got parked and shut off. I had this similar problem a couple years ago and replaced the thermostat and fixed the situation. So, once again I replaced the thermostat. At first still no warm air. I remembered that the last time I needed to bleed the air out of the coolant system and once I done this everything seem to be working great. Then today I jumped in the car and turned on heater with only cool air coming out. Shortly after the Check Engine light came on, keep in mind up until this point it has not came on at all. I stopped by Advanced Auto Parts and they checked the code and it was P1285. They said air/fuel mixture but after studying some forums on the code it seems to be a temperature problem. I am giving it time to cool off and going to double check fluid levels and lift battery lead to reset code. Just looking for input on where to look/begin now. On last note, the heater is still working some and then going out again. THANKS in advance

sounds to me like theres still a little air in the system, you loosened the bolt in the vent tube on the top of the engine to let the air out of the block? if you don't get all of the air out of the block, it will nearly always overheat.. it won't purge itself

I think and hope your right! After original post after letting the car cool down, I un-hooked battery and "burped" it again. I just backed the screw out till bubbles were coming up through threads. I would close off and repeat. After a few times it was all fluid seeping out. I drove the car down road a couples mile and back with heater working fine and no light. So hopefully that is all it was. Only thing that is still a little unclear the car was not actually overheating when light came on this morning according to gauge. I had no heat but temperature gauge showed normal operating temp. The light never came on when car original got hot (almost to H) before I changed the thermostat. I am hopeful the problem is resolved, guess I will find out when I venture out this evening. Thanks for responding!

if air came out of the vent then thats definitely what was the problem. keep an eye on it and happy stangin'...

help

I have a 2003 that first service light came on then temp gauge showed over heating. turned off car replaced water, thermostat and flushed system. still running cold air not overheating but service light on. took to auto zone trouble code p1285. does my car need to be burped too?? this has been horrible just want to get convertible back on road.

I had the same problem, with my V6.Let me show you how I solve the issue.
1-(engine cold ).Take off the radiator cap and the vent plug.
2-Fill the radiator with 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water.
3-Fill the vent until the radiator start to drop the antifreeze.
Now put back the radiator cap,and keep filling the vent until the end If it need it.
Now close the vent.Add antifreeze to the pressure release tank
between the min and max position.
4-Start the car. When the engine it's close to get the middle temperature,
turn on the heather on the maximum hot position.
5-Wait until the radiator fan start.
6-Add more fluid to the pressure release tank If it need it. Between the min
and max position.
On this point the heather should be working great.
If don't,it's ok,just wait for the engine to cold down and just add
more antifreeze on the vent couse this mean that still air on the system.
Now, I don't saying that this is the professional method or the best one.
This method just solve my problem.
Greetings and hope this helps you too
