I was wondering, during 66 was the inline 6 only offered in the dark ford blue. My engine right now is painted the old ford blue that was used on the 64 1/2.

I like to have things accurate, i was reading a couple of articles for 1966 mustang red engine paint... i was wondering if there were actualy engines that were red in the year 1966. And if so that is enough justification for me to paint it red, if not then im really gona have to think on it.

Ford is blue, chevy is red and dodge is orange

Hello. The motors in the 66 Mustangs were the darker blue. The six cylinders in the 65 Mustangs were that reddish orange, but, after that, it was blue from them on.

The 65 170 CID used the reddish orange color on the vlave cover and the air filter, the block was black, I have seen pics of 65 200 CID with a red valve cover and air cleaner and black block. In 1966 the in-line 6 all went to "Corporate Blue" the dark blue paint colr and the everything was painted that color, the block, the valve cover and the air cleaner. Only exception to that was on the Sprint models in which they had the chrome valve cover and air cleaner.

tnguy1004: I have seen references to the Sprint engine that state only the air cleaner was chrome and others that say the valve cover was chrome, At the very least the oil filler cap was chrome.

The Sprint package did not only dress up the engine but the exterior as well including the wire wheel hub cabs and the trim around the rear fender the 3 fins that's supposed to look like an air scoop for the brakes was removed and a C-shaped pinstripe was added...

I am no expert on the sprint and from what I have seen many people will put a chrome air cleaner on a 200 CID engine and call it a "Sprint"

tnguy1004: I started reading more into the sprint engine and it is amazing the amount of inconsistency in regards to what and what was not included in the sprint package...there is another post on this forum re; the pin striping on the sprint cars and it has a link that has a lot of info on sprint cars.

The bottom line it seems the only chrome that came from the factory on the Sprint versions was infact the air cleaner. The rest of the engine should look like the standard 6 cylinder engine...no chrome valve cover. I stand corrected.

new here, working on a 66 mustang, the inline 6, i noticed the air filter is not attached to the breather valve(?, the piece that has the black cap) The one im working on has a hose connecting the two pieces, i do not like this since it spews oil all over the damn place. Do i need to adjust anything before disconnecting the filter and cap? Cheers, many thanks and will provide pics if needed.

510erock, Your not going to get many responses by posting in a thread that is about engine color. But you are in luck because I believe i can answer your question.

So you have an Inline 6, and your talking about the breather with the snorkel, and on the snorkel it has a hose leading to the oil breather cap?

Mine is like this, it is a California emissions thing. Mustangs that were produced in California have this. Other mustangs have the snorkel air breather without this hose connecting to the oil breather cap. My question is what exactly are you trying to do and what are you asking.
