I have a 1988 Mustang 5.0 and just the other day when i went to start it up to go for a drive it made the worst grinding or banging noises. i believe that it is coming from the clutch or transmission section of the car. the car starts and runs but now every time i start it the car makes this noise. i have not been driving it since this happened a few days ago. does anyone know whats going on? I would greatly appriciate some help with this one.

Thanks, Steven

did the starter teeth get stuck in the out position? this could cause that noise. does it do it with clutch pushed in or out? I'd check the starter first. If not that then check to make sure the clutch didn't come apart. If it only does it when you have the car in gear and are letting off the clutch and it makes a BA-BAM noise it's more than likely the transmission went out

Steven, those grinding noises you hear upon start up is probably chipped or missing ring gear teeth on the flywheel or flexplate. I had that similar noise on start up, a very loud rumbling sound. Pulled off the starter and checked the teeth. Sure enough, there were quite a few chipped teeth on the flywheel. I replaced the whole flywheel and no more noise. MEL

the noise is continuous. i will go and take a look at the starter and the fly wheel and see if anything is broken or worn down. any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks everyone.

hey

I had the same problem this morning and pulled my starter and it was stuck which pisses me off cause it's only like 3 weeks old. I swapped it with one I had in the shop and it works fine.

If it is continuous, it is getting stuck in the out position and is staying engaged with the flywheel. New starter will fix these problems.
