Well I am new here, and I have a mustang, Its an 88 GT, but i have some problems with it. I had my front end checked today trying to figure out why my wheel wouldn't straighten up, it would be turned a quarter turn when going straight, but if the steering wheel was jiggled, it would straighten. Well I was told the column is shot, and the rack is bleeding pretty bad, well i knew the rack was bad, but i was told it wasn't causing the issue. Is there any way to fix the "Slop" in the column without having to pay close to 500 for a new steering column with installation?

definitly could be the rag joint shop around for a used column and put it in yourself they are not hard to replace and that would save you a ton I replaced mine with the rack and completly rebuilt the front suspension for well under 500 drives straight now good luck

Pick up the front end and try to wiggle the wheels with the steering locked, Look and see if the tie rods are moving.

Edit: I thought you were asking how to straighten your wheel. My bust.

The rag joint can get worn out but it won't cause that problem in it's entirety. It'll have a little play in it, which is what it was designed to do, but not to that quarter turn of the steering wheel.

Are you asking why you can wiggle the steering wheel back and forth without it turning your front wheels? If yes, then the rack is worn out. There's splines inside the rack and they wear out where the steering wheel is working the most, which is when you're going straight. When you turn the steering wheel, you get into the splines that aren't worn out and the slop goes away.

I'm glad Wax let me know I answered in the wrong way.

It was a rack issue, the bushings are shot, just for an update. Rack is moving along the K member. Saw it yesterday when sanding down the car. Tie rods are fine, but will replace them when buying the new rack.
