Good morning everyone.

I'm thinking of putting some turn downs right after my super 44's, so they dump before the R.Axle.

I've got some seasoned mustang friends who claim it won't make the car any louder (I want LOUD), I think they're crazy.

I've got to imagine this an inexpensive way to make her louder. Right now, the setup has dump pipes right at the rear bumper (hidden-a la GT body kit).

What do you guys think?

it doesnt make it much(if any) louder outside the car..

inside the car is another story..

plus the exhaust fumes fill the cabin..so be ready for that..

just take your tailpipes off and start it up..thats what it'll sound like..

you want LOUD,get some longtubes, bullet style mufflers and 3" exhaust with no cats...

I've got Dynomax longtubes, 2.5" pipes, and Flowmaster Super 44s on my '76 with dumps at the rear axle.

It's loud as hell outside the car.

It's ten times louder inside the car.

I ran the Flowtech Stinger setup on my foxbody (non-bypass version of the Warlock mufflers with dumps at the rear axle) when I had it, and currently have that exact same setup on my Chevy (kept it when I sold the car, modified it to fit the Chevy). They were the same way, quiet for those outside, but louder than hell inside the car.

i have 1-5/8 longtubes,2.5 o/r h pipe and dumped flowmasters..its loud outside as well, but i didnt notice any major outside difference in noise level;s when i pulled the tails off, except the sound now comes from underneath the car instead of out back..it sounds more "muffled" at idle, since the body of the car is "blocking" the sound from your ears more than if it were shooting straight out the back

I tried it on my 90.I had the tail pipes reinstalled the next day. If you're running old iron with a lopy cam it sounds great but with a stock smooth idle it sounds really tame in my opinion. Dumps give you more of a rumble sound and without big compression and a cam with a wide lobe separation you are just sacrificing tone for volume. Mine sounded like an old dump truck.

i only took mine off to drop another 20lbs..it all adds up..car weighs 2650 with a full tank of gas..the only time i really drive mine on the street is to the track and back:rollgrin:

I've had my turndowns for a year and love em sounds alot better than stock and its awsome to watch the dirt fly out from under:) and they sound better farther away

I have them, they sound great but the exhaust fumes are terrible with the windows rolled down. So much so that I'm considering putting tailpipes on.

thanks everyone. i'm going to be putting on some sub frame connectors soon, and was thinking about doing some exhast work at the time.
I might just disconnect some pipes to see what it sounds like, then put em back on.
hell, maybe i'll just take the mufflers right off...

anyway, thanks.

I run dumps on my car, and I love them for 2 reasons: 1, technically it's the best flowing setup for the exhaust and 2, because of the way it sounds. It is quite a bit louder inside and outside the car, especially inside. If you are looking to make more sound, you are probably going to like dumps.
I would remove the tailpipes in a way that they can be easily bolted or welded back in in case you get tired of the noise.

Wow :eyebulge:

That's like 1000# lighter than my car with gas + me.

I had turn downs on a 89 GT I had a long time ago, it was stock exhaust from the factory restrictive headers back with the h pipe converted to off road with 40 series flowmasters and I liked the sound alot, the car sounded good, with the tail pipes the car echoed out the back and with the turn downs it was a super deep rumble, some say turn down's hurt performance because you lose back pressure, I couldnt tell and with the bolt ons I had it ran and sounded awesome so I left the exhaust the way it was, either way you will still have the tail pipes to put back on if you dont like it.

that was the whole idea behind this car when i swapped the stuff from my pig convertible.. im roughly 700lbs lighter than the convertible..and that was after i removed 150lbs from that thing lol

I have the super 44's with turn downs and love them! I don't have any problems with fumes. There turned down right in front of the rear axle. There will be a little more exhaust drone with the turn downs, mine seems to be about 1600 rpms!
