Well, I believe I've blown both front door panel speakers in my mustang with shaker 500 sound system. Not sure how, I do not play my music or bass that incredible loud but they seem to be blown, and I can't stand how they sound right now. I did my research on the forum and found out I need 6x8 speakers but I'd like to know what you guys recommend. Obviously I'm looking for something that will handle better then the stock speakers but also would like it to be somewhat affordable (I know quality doesn't come cheap but I don't need the best of the best either). Can I find something better then the stock speakers at walmart or target? Do I need to step up to best buy or a specialty store? Thanks in advance.

Would something like one of these be okay?

I guess this thread is an opportunity to ask if there is a direct replacement for the door subs out there anywhere...everything i have seen is a fabricated effort. Ive been thinking I wouldnt mind a small upgrade of the shaker 500 and I do like bass in my music so ive been thinking of a trunk mount, but would rather change the door subs for a better factory look

The problem with the door subs is that their cover is part of the speaker and to replace it with an adequate replacement will leave you with an exposed sub. Which is fine for trunk mounts. Not so fine when it's close to being kicked. If you fabricated covers for the new speakers it'd be fine. Another problem is the size of the subs is very uncommon. So you might consider just living with the factory ones.

Make sure you check the wattage of your speakers. Some may require an amp to work properly. The wattage our radios put out escapes me at the moment however. Unless you have an aftermarket head unit. If so, then still make sure you check wattages.

The stock subs take 5V. If you're installing a replacement head, you can decrease the voltage to the subs with a 5V regulator from Radio Shack for a couple bucks. I'm not sure how you would increase the voltage from a Shaker head to a replacement sub. I assume you would tap into a switched 12V line but that's just a guess.

I replaced the stock speakers with 2 sets of Kenwood KFC-C689-PS 3 way's. All 4 were around $100 shipped and blew away the stock paper speakers. They sound great for the price and were simple to install on my 05.
