I was wondering if anyone would have any ideas on why my Air Conditioner Compressor won't kick on when I run the air conditioning. If I have someone jump start it then it works fine, but it won't start by itself. I just had the freon added to make sure it wasn't low, cause it never gets cold, but I guess that would have to do with the compressor not turning on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

You need to find the Wide Open Throttle relay on the passenger fender well - the power for the compressor goes through the cycle switch on the accumulator (should be closed for a charged system), goes through the WOT relay to the compressor. The WOT is a common failure point. It's purpose is to cut off the A/C (it's normally closed to supply power to the clutch) when you go to WOT.

Thank You for your reply!, I'll have to check this out.

Or what you can do . (what I have to do TEMP) Is to turn the Key back towards driver alittle. Turn signals will work this way as well. I hate ELECTRICAL gremlins. But his helps alot. Found only thing I have to replace is IGNITION switch. Thats it. Try all of the above

Did you figure out the problem? Just curious.

Haven't been able to have checked out

No, I haven't been able to have someone check this out for me yet, been very busy. Someone was also telling me that I possibly have a leak in the lines somewhere so I guess that's on list for checking too.

Thanks!

When they jumped it where did they jump it from? There is a low pressure switch on the dryer by the firewall you can try to unplug it and jump it there if it works jumped there try to plug it back in if it doesnt work again then try a new low pressure switch.Ive seen them go bad too. Good luck

Pretty sure they jumped from there

I'm pretty sure they jumped from there, but I'll have to double check, thanks for the information though I hadn't heard this before, hopefully it will help narrowing it down.

Thanks again'

Also if you think you might have a freon leak you might want to have someone install dye in with the freon so if it is leaking you can find the leak easy with a black light. That works very well i use it almost every day helps find a leak fast. Also if they jump it there and i doesnt turn on check for voltage from one of the wires if there is no power you will have to back track from there. Good luck again

Thank You for all the great information!

That's a very good idea, what a time saver it will be. I'll have to have those wires checked also and see if any voltage is getting to them. Now hopefully one of these will be the problem, cause I've been melting the last week and I can't take it anymore.....

The reason I inquired is I had AC problems also. It blew hot air one day. The compressor was not kicking on. I bought some Ford shop manuals and noted in the circuit there is a low pressure cutout switch, so I naturally suspected a freon leak. To make sure it wasn't the compressor, I jumpered the switch (mine was on the dryer/receiver) with a (shun) paperclip. The compressor did kick on. I bought freon (R134a) with the dye and a black light and charged it up. The next morning the charge was gone. It had substantial leakage from one or both hose connections at the condenser (I couldn't tell for sure which one, the hoses are inches apart and the entire side of the condenser glowed yellow with the blacklight). The dealership fixed the hoses and all was well until my compressor seized (it was the original R12 compressor). The compressor was replaced and all is well (so far).
Good luck and hopefully the problem is minor,
Tom

I can't say what's wrong, but I did jsut have the same problem with my 95GT a/t. I took it in to charge when it started bolwing hot air, and they said the clutch wasn't kicking in, so I took to an A/C and the fixed in in a jif for $75.

On a side note, if you have A/C issues, try to find a shop that specializes in A/C repair...
I had a 95 Diamonte and when my A/C went out, EVERY shop in town wanted to order some special a/c unit for like $2k, I found an a/c only shop and they laughed, they said it's the EXACT same a/c as the one in the dodge caravan, stealth, and 3000gt. They did the whole job for like $1400, LESS than the other guys wanted just for parts!!! Any how, since then I have always checked around for a/c stuff, but I always end up back at Henderson Air, they know all the tricks. Even this time, when my stang cluth went, I had just "swung" into a little quicky lube shop for the charge and when they found the cluth not working, they wanted to REPLACE it, REPLACE it!!! IT WAS A $75 fix, it didn't need replaced!!!

low pressure switch on accumulater is most likely holding it out, jump em out see what happens

A/C Compressor will not come on. I replaced the CCRM located inside the passenger side inner fender, the A/C control head. The A/C is fully charged. Also, the Coolant fan will not continue to stay on when the Defroster or Max air is turned on. I am not getting power to the high pressure switch. Any ideas?

This thread is 7 years old I am pretty sure none of these guys will respond. Best bet is too start your own thread and describe your problem and what you have tried to fix it with.

I have a 2010 dodge avenger, my a/c is blowing hot air, took it to the dealership, he said it was the transducer valve, so he replaced it and there is still no power going to the compressor, I paid 300 for nothing, here it is almost July and here in the desert it gets pretty damn hot, what else can I check for, they wanted to put a new compressor in, and I said NO because you don't know if that is the problem, where else can I take it, .
very disappointed in dodge dealership.
