Going to look at a low mileage 4.0 tomorrow to replace mine that just blew. Guy lost the keys but says it's low mileage and ran great but obviously, I can't verify that without starting it. Any way to do that without the original key? Can I take the key from mine and somehow trick the computer into starting? Sounds like I'm asking how to steal a car I bet lol but I just need a way to verify mileage and possibly hear it run to listen for any ticks, etc.

Off hand I'm going to say no. The keys are programmed to the ECU via the PATS system. And to program a new key you have to have at least one of the originals that came with the car. If the owner tows it to a dealership he'll need to show proof of ownership (title) before they will reprogram the ECU and/or make a new key.

I'd get the seller to send you a scan of his clean title before even going to see the car. Then, suggest the seller get a new set of keys for the car and get it running before he tries to sell it.

Lost key? Both keys and fobs lost? Really? No wonder the milage is low. I found a 2005 GT with both original keys and working fobs (one is marginal) two years ago next month with only 22K on the clock. Looks and runs new still at 47k.

Don't be willing to pay for the car, THEN drag it onto a roll-back, drop it at a Ford dealer, wait several days for them to match up a new set of keys, hand them a couple hundred dollars, and THEN find out if the car runs. That's too many flaming hoops to jump through.

This story sounds very odd to me. Like how you lose both keys to a 2006 car and not get them replaced? I mean I could see this story more fitting on a 1966 or maybe even a 1990's car in a barn, but not a low mileage 2006... I would look into this story with caution. Is he saying he lost the title as well and selling as a "parts" car? If so it is more than likely stolen...

If you are set on proceeding ask to see the title and make sure the VIN and the sellers name all match... Then as suggested have it dropped at Ford as they will have to reprogram and recut keys...

No putting your key in will not do anything, but trigger the annoying key in with door open ding. It won't turn as it isn't cut right.

I mean you can hot-wire any car, but I don't know how to do that and I doubt anybody is going to give you a step by step in a open forum has that would be how to steal a car 101 and I can imagine would be frowned upon by the site mods/admin. haha
