I am getting the stock 2.73 gears replaced with 3.31 takeoffs today. I have the gears and installation kit and I have an SCT tuner. I do not have a tune installed - used it for awhile before deciding the minor performance gain wasn't worth risking my warranty.

My question is... where in the tuner's menus do I find the option to change gear ratio without loading a custom tune?

Look for Modify Options, or some similar wording. Since SCT insists on us reverse-engineering their nice handheld every time you use it, I have trouble remembering the exact path.

It comes up very early in the choices after it saves the current tune. If you hit the thing I'm thinking of, you'll see the usual tire diameter, timing, WOT A/F, and fan-on temperatures there too.

Under "Program Vehicle" I have "Return To Stock", "Strategy Tune" and "Custom Tune". There is also another selection in the top-level menu called "Vehicle Info". Would you know which of those selections would lead to the modify options item?

Vehicle info is for this a dead end that gives version numbers, etc. Adjust Options is partially hidden. Believe it's behind either of Strategy Tune or Custom Tune, and might also appear during "Return To Stock." Sorry to be vague, but I am at work & trying to do it from memory.....

The tuner won't let you change anything unless the tune is loaded, you can't just change the ratio in the stock tune with the tuner.

You can get Bama or whoever to make a tune for you that only changes the gear ratio.

Of course you could get the Ford dealer to re-flash the pcm with a oem 3.31 tune.

I got 3.31 takeoffs as well. I actually was lucky enough to have a friend who does tuning for a living and he was able to flash the official Ford calibration on mine (Performance Package V6). If you take it to a dealership they should be able to do that as well though.

By the way you're going to LOVE the 3.31s. I couldn't break 2nd gear loose after I upgraded my wheels/tires with the 2.73s. Now I can do it easily! :gringreen

I took Ltngdrvr's suggestion and had Bama create a "tune" that is completely stock except for the new gear ratio. They had never been asked for that before but had no problem doing it. I may give the street tune a try again to see if the gears make the tune any more effective.

I'm been seriously thinking about doing that so I have a good stock tune for my smog test in a few years. The question I have, will I need to have my SCT tuner revised as if I had a new car ($175 fee)? Or will the computers alphabetic access code stay the same?

You would probably need updated tunes for the new oem calibration but wouldn't have to buy all over again.
