To have spoiler even if not a mach. I have seen a few 69 coupes with spoilers and am currently rebuilding a 69 coupe. All of my friends tell me a spoiler on the rear would be an excellent option. I was just curious if anyone from that generation knows if that was a trend then to or just something now. I would like to keep the car as 60's and 70's as possible, if you know what I mean.

Well . I cant speak from experience , But my dad had one of every body style from the 60's mustang . I have seen ONE with a wing . I say do what YOU want with the car , because if you dont like it , who the hell else will ?

Being old, and having purchased many cars now popularized, I would say, "No...spoilers are a 80's and later phenom. Yes, there were cars with spoilers but they weren't popular on street cars. The only cars having them were specialty or muscle cars, Shelby Mustang, Plymouth Superbird, GTO Judge, etc. Today, even 4 cylinder LoPo's have them.

Well I'm one of those folks from that era :sadcry: . Like was said above only the Bosses for the most part came with spoilers. However as they became popular thru the 80's and 90's, people have gone back and added them to the original Mustangs. Believe it not, even us "old guys" from back then knew all they did was add weight and didn't become functional until you were doing 100+ mph. Back then it was "function over form"...unlike today where the look is what counts.

Now that being said, I have fallen into the same modern day trap and have out fitted my present 1970 Mach 1 with a front and rear spoiler. :thumbsup

I grew up with them also. The Mach didn't have 'em until them until '70 (option). The 69-70 Boss 302 had them but as an option. The Boss 302 Trans-Am race cars made them popular for the Mustang crowd (they did need the down force and used front and rear spoilers). The T/A series was very popular in those days. They would draw a bigger crowd than a NASCAR race. After seeing a T/A race (the Boss cars killed the Camaro's and Cuda's on the track), I decided to start saving for my first Mustang. I've owned 13 since. I see some of those old (now freshly restored) T/A cars on the vintage circuits today. They still give me a thrill.

I believe that is what started the spoiler craze.
