My 2014 GT 5.0 came with FORD Dual Clutch Fluid with XL-18 additive and I would like to change the fluid at 20K miles but not sure what to use??:frown:

I have read that the XL-18 additive is not good but Dual Clutch Fluid by itself won't work well!!rant3.gif

Hope you guys have some ideas since I think the shift smoothness has deteriorated over the last 10K miles!!:|

Thanks in advance!!

on my 2012 (pre-XL18) I swapped it out with Redline MTL. That smoothed it out some but still is occasionally notchy. I do think over the 30K miles I've put on it it's smoother but idk if that is true.

The MT82 has probably garnered more attention than either Ford or its customers want. The MT82 poll at the top of this forum has over 8000 replies about this and assorted other issues with the MT82. This transmission is akin to termites. There are people who have a problem. Others that don't have a problem. And others that will have problems again.

It would certainly be nice if there was a magic fluid to cure all the reported ills with the MT82 in 2011 - 2014 models.

I certainly agree and mine's not bad but not completely smooth either!!:frown: Just wondered about problems using XL-18 and if I could add another little bottle and see any improvement??:|

All I have read says BG Syncro Shift II is probably the best all around??:|

https://www.bgprod.com/catalog/drive-line/bg-syncro-shift-ii/

Any of you folks using this stuff??:|

I used Royal purple on mine and it made a night & day difference, I did install a Barton 2 piece bracket at the same time but I dont see how the bracket could change my shift smoothness, actually it made it a little rougher than the stock bracket. Make sure to get a pump too cause theres no space to pour the fluid.

I would say that everyone shifts different and what works for one might not for another. The xl-18 is supposed to be for initial break in. Adding more later will not help. I would try different fluids as these trans seem to be different. Redline MTL worked for me. I also notice that shifting into secound while making left hand turns I can but not always get a little notch depending how fast I am making the turn. Shift into second before the turn. The motor mounts and the shifter flex for some reason on left turns. Also shifting at 3k rpm and above things work perfect. These stangs like rpm's. Use the clock method when shifting and never keep your hand on the top of the shift knob.

1 to 2 hand at 2 o'clock side of shift ball bringing it back toward you and down
2 to 3rd hand at 6 o'clock side of ball bringing it straight up allowing the center spring to work
3 to 4th hand at 12 o'clock front of ball bringing it straight down(easiest shift).
4 to 5th hand at 9 o'clock side of ball forcing lever to the right and up.
5 to 6th hand at 11 o'clock keeping right pressure and down.
This might seem a lot to think about but with some practice it will be like second nature.
My hand is never on the top of the ball unless going into reverse. This works very well down shifting using rev matching as well. I can't remember the last time I missed a shift.

4th to 5th should be at 9 o'clock shouldn't it??
That was a test to see if you were paying attention. Thanks for pointing that out. All fixed now.:laugh2:

I feel pretty lucky, both of my MT82s seem to just fall into gear when wanted.

I am curious about lubricants though. Dose Redline gearlube for the MT82 transmission require (or recommend) any friction modifiers or other additives?

Recently, I've been reading about motor oils, and I'm just about ready to switch to RedLine there too.

Many people get excited about these lubricants. I think pretty much any properly rated lube is fine, but I like the IDEA behind the synthetics. It's more of a feel good bandaid than anything else. However, if a particular lubricant improves wear or performance characteristics I'm all for it.

@dusman59

Have you considered something like an MGW shifter to eliminate the 2nd gear gaff on left turns? It wouldn't really be a big deal for someone like me who drives conservatively most of the time but I'd like to try one out.
@Coosawjack, I look forward to your final decision and the reported result if you switch. Please keep us posted.

I pretty much shift that way naturally without even thinking about it. I didn't realize there was a name for this. Its more natural than some might realize, it doesn't really take any (or very little) thought, but it does work well. Thanks for posting this.

I have considered the MGW set up. I'm sure it would be an improvement. Making the left turn and not shifting in the middle of the turn but before works fine. The nibble would only happen if I was aggressively accelerating in which case I would leave it in 1st until the turn was completed.

thx for the explanation....I describe it different but using/countering the centering springs is impt. fwiw the biggest improvement for mine was motor mounts. They really helped with 2nd gear lockout when pushing the car, but a good bit more NVH.

I have an MGW shifter and it still does it during shifts from 1st to 2nd in the middle of left hand turns....WEIRD!!:|

I also found 3 quarts of BG Syncro Shift II fluid at my favorite FORD dealership.......only 3 quarts left and they no longer carry BG products!!:frown:

Going to pick it up tomorrow and will put it in ASAP.......I'll report my findings....stay tuned!!

BG Syncro Shift II Fluid.....First Impressions!!

Well Folks......I picked up 3 Quarts of this stuff and came home to drive the car and warm up the OEM fluid to hopefully get most of it out warm??

We had impending T-Storms so I rush things a bit but got the fluid warm enough to drain very quickly......let it drip about half an hour!!:| I installed a magnetic drain plug (cannot hurt) and commenced to pumping the BG fluid in with the car jacked up on the passenger's side....actually went smoother than expected!!

Rain came and went so I took it out for a test drive with ZERO resistance or "nibbling" during the first run through the gears......IMPRESSIVE but it was about 70* outside so a "cold shifting test" will be forthcoming!!:|

I drove it about 30 miles and have to say the shifting was actually soother and felt quicker than before (16K miles with OEM fluid) and the transmission seemed quieter....so far I am VERY HAPPY and will report again after more driving!!

BTW....I kept the OEM fluid JUST IN CASE!!

I drove it about 50 miles yesterday and even cool (55*) it shifted glassy smooooooth........IMPRESSED!!

If it ever gets cold here we'll see if it really works better cold but for now I have to say BG Syncro Shift II works better than the OEM fluid!!thumbsup3.gif
