I have a 1988 GT and I recently replaced the clutch cable cause I felt like the old one was stretching out. The new one seems to have stretched out in two weeks. Am I missing something here? anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

How many miles does the clutch have on it? It could be the pressure plate wearing out. Also did you adjust your clutch pedal with the new cable or before you replaced it?

I had the same problem with my 02 GT and it was time to replace the clutch, when you go in gear and take off does it release close to the floor?

Yeah i hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds to me like your pressure plate is getting weak. I would say time for a clutch replacement.

Ok so I took your advice and replaced the clutch the pressure plate the throw out bearing and the clutch cable. I even replaced the ground cable from the battery to the frame cause I heard that might make the clutch cable fail. It failed again anyway. There is way to much slack in the cable and there isn't any damage to the outer sleeve of the cable. Thoughts?

Have you measured the length of what appears to be the stretched cable and compared it to the length of a new one, to determine if it is actually stretching? And if it is actually stretching, what brand is it?

Just a quick question. Please expand upon how the battery cable has an effect on the clutch cable. thx

I have heard that if you don't have a proper ground the electricity will look for some way to ground itself. The clutch cable will take that job and will heat up because it's not designed for this use and will stretch or even snap the cable.... so I've heard.

Hmmm, interesting theory, haven't heard that one before....

Regarding the cable, I would try Willy's suggestion if that's at all possible.

What kind of clutch did you buy? Aftermarket "high performance" or stock replacement? If you used an aftermarket clutch, many of them work better with a firewall cable adjuster to get them dialed in right.

Something else to look into is, if you are still using the stock plastic quadrant then that might be your problem. When they get old they can fatigue and begin to flex when you push the pedal in and as a result not allow complete disengagement of the clutch; which would mimick the symptom of a stretched cable. Also, if you still are running said quadrant, have you attempted the self adjusting feature? Reach down and grab the clutch pedal, lift up toward yourself until you feel it pop slightly and click; the cable is now adjusted.

Ive run into this issue as well with clutch cables / clutch. Brand was Pioneer and sometimes they make a good one and some times they dont. Got an aluminum quadrant Adjustable firewall mount and the new on i got just seems to collapse inside itself. now i find when i tap the clutch i watch my Volt meter, temp gauge and RPM gauge freak out sometimes it does it some times it doesnt but i find its doing it more and more now. dont know what the problem for that is i disconnected the neutral switch from the clutch pedal assembly so its controlled by hand but still seems to have something grounding on the clutch cable. Problem is only a few weeks old and cant figure out why it does this. Some other symptoms is it can kill the car but because of driving it will chug and keep going. any ideas???
