As well as the new Focus RS which the engine is actually derived from

New Ford Focus RS expected in 2015 | Autocar

The new Focus RS’s case is also strengthened considerably because it’s expected to use a new, Ford-developed 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder tuned to around 330bhp. The engine, which will also feature in the Mustang, will comfortably exceed the output of the last Focus RS’s Volvo-derived 2.5-litre five-pot that generated 301bhp, or 345bhp in the RS500. It will make use of latest turbo and direct-injection technology to greatly increase fuel efficiency.

It will have to be significantly re-engineered for the Focus where, unlike in the Mustang, it will be transversely mounted. Power and torque are also expected to be moderately higher than in the Mustang to ensure it remains the halo performance product in Ford’s range, especially in Europe, where the bulk of sales are expected. Initial discussions to use electric motors on the rear wheels to boost performance and cut emissions were reportedly deemed too expensive to develop and a negative distraction for buyers.

Does this mean the Focus will also be available in the US? Interesting news, wonder if the 3.7 will be toast.

The RS doesn't look bad if you removed the wing off the roof.

And I guess the Turbo 4 Mustang will be in the Sport Compact class now? Going back to one exhaust pipe, a big 6 inch diameter coffee can that makes fart sounds? 330HP with good gas mileage is nice, I guess...

ummm Thanks Ford for running us over with the Focus:nogrinner

More power might be just what is needed to fix this issue for us mustang owners since in the looks department we are still the best looking.

Now I need to figure out how to fund a forged short block and a Paxton novi..... My fiancé is either going to kill me (most likely) or leave me...

uhm so I won't know if it's an import behind me or an american car now?? that's nice....

That's where I draw the line, no 4cyl american sports cars. It will probably sound like the skittle.

I`ll take a wait & see attitude. There was a turbo 4 Mustang before.

Ford Developing 2.3L Turbo Engine For 2015 Mustang? Return Of The SVO?
Image

In the last few years there have been many reports that Ford is developing a turbocharged EcoBoost Mustang. At first it was rumored that the new engine configuration would make an appearance when the Mustang received it's new powerplants in 2011. When that didn't pan out the rumors started pointing to 2014 when the Mustang is expected to get a total redesign. Now it's Motor Authority reporting that an unnamed source is telling them that the Ecoboost Mustang is coming in 2015, and more surprisingly, in 4 cylinder form.

Return of the SVO? It sure sounds that way. According to the report Ford is not only developing a V6 Ecoboost Mustang but a 4 cylinder version as well. The 4 cylinder variant will reportedly be based on the 2.0L engine sitting between the strut towers of the 2013 Ford Taurus. The Mustang's engine, however, will feature a redesigned cylinder head and a larger bore bumping it's displacement to 2.3 liters. While the increased displacement will help create additional power we suspect that its more about paying homage to the original Mustang SVO which was also powered by a turbo 2.3L engine.

As for the V6 version, from everything we've heard Ford will be using the same 3.5L Ecoboost engine that is currently being put to work in the F-150 pickup truck. However, Motor Authority is reporting that Ford is also working on a new 2.7L turbo engine that will be put to use in varying FWD and RWD models including the Mustang. While that is definitely a possibility it doesn't seem to make much sense for Ford to offer both a 2.3L and 2.7L Ecoboost Mustang so we're still expecting (hoping?) they'll use the 3.5L instead.

Earlier this year Ford Motor Company Executive Chairman, Bill Ford Jr, confirmed that Ford is indeed working on a Ecoboost Turbo Mustang while speaking to a group of students at Princeton University. He did not say if it would be in a 4 or 6 cylinder format.

A friend of mine in high school had an SVO. Thing was a blast 3 seconds at a time. I can still hear that old school turbo buzzer in my head!

IMO why the heck are they trying to put a 4 cyl in a mustang? So a fun 4 cyl with some power? I thought that was a focus st or rs? Da fuq. I definitely would not buy a 4 cylinder mustang. Illogical

I reckon I'll just have to get my doors blown off by both, 'cause I'm not trading up, especially not for domestic rice. I'd love to have the added power with better MPG's to boot, but there is definitely a line to be drawn.

330bhp from a commercially available 4 cylinder? Sounds pretty awesome to me as long as the turbo lag is not too rampant.

You would trade your 5.0 for that ugly thing? Whaaa
Im not saying i would trade in my 5.0, but in the future Im assuming a 4 door vehicle would be necessary.

Something about a small, 4 door car that can go always have been appealing to me. Plus its in a different class so comparing it would be pointless.

I'm going to go ahead and say that the new 2.3 4T will be pretty much untunable. Intake mods will require a tune and there's only so much boost you can push because DI is not like injectors that you can swap out.
330HP from 4 cyl is right at the ragged edge of reliability. I like engines with "room to grow". The 3.7 responds pretty well to mods and I'd wager that the current V6 car will aways be faster than a turbo 4, taking drivability and reliability into consideration.

The most familiar I am with 4cyl turbos is the VW 2.0t. It makes 200hp/207tq out of the box but a simple tune gives it 250hp/304tq. After that, you need a better fuel pump, downpipe, intake and exhaust and a bigger turbo if you want 300hp. It's expensive to do and isn't as fuel efficient (although APR claims it is lol). With the technology we have now, I would think that the 330hp 2.3l is basically a race version, and you'll probably see something like 275-300hp from the factory. The Hyundai 2.0t makes 274hp I think, but I'm not too sure on the aftermarket tuning options for it but have read that tuning only yields 20 more hp.

Which if that's true, then there is probably still room for a 3.7l that takes advantage of the lessons learned from aftermarket tuning and parts (CAI/TB/2.5" exhaust/3.73 gears lol) along with DI to get something like 350-360hp. If the new car is lighter, that kind of power will be formidable. Obviously that's all speculation on my part, but if I'm right will someone buy me a beer?

We're going to have to get used to this trend. It is happening throughout the industry. I just hope that when they downsize these engines they actually make the better MPG that they're claiming. Too many engines that brag about V8 power with V6 economy aren't living up to the hype at all. I have no doubt that the newer cars will be more powerful and put up better performance numbers, but they'd better return the MPG as well. I want something for my soulless engine and increased expense.
More components to repair (turbos, intercoolers, etc..) and more costly engines (direct injection, higher compression, etc..)
Yes, the turbo 4 Mustang will be faster than the 3.7, the new turbo I-6 M3 will be faster than the V8 M3, on and on. But where is the soul?

I don't believe there will be much of a gas savings unless you do a lot of urban driving. The car will end up weighing similar to other Mustang models, meaning hwy miledge will be similar, like the v6 & v8 are now (engine load the same). Add the fact that many Mustang drivers will be in boost much of the time & mpg won't be improved much over the other new models. This is about the forein market & their very high gas prices.
