At first I thought my steering wheel was on too tight or something :) but anyway when I turn my wheel the power steering thing kicks in, and I can hear it. It sounds like two surfaces rubbing together (no screaching just a whir when the wheel is being moved, but a whir that I wouldn't expect, my pontiac firebird was really quiet it sounds like the motor that is turning needs to be lubricated or something.

Does anyone know about the power steering and what it means when the rubbing/turning/whir sound appears? anything I can do?

Thanks!
Mark.

There could be two things.

First does it have the right amount of fluid when cold and hot?

If so your power steering pump could be going.

I'd frist fill it and see what happens if it's the same it could be burning out.

cool i'll top it up soon. is the reservoir easy to find? does the fluid run around the motor!? i'm guessing it takes some kind of oil or something. any info would be much appreciated, thanks.

Your pump is located just below your alternator. There is a fill cover on it......

When your going to fill it you need to look and the dip stick!
The power steering pump dosent take much fluid to fill!!
Over filling it came damage it if not make it shot.

i dont think my power steering has a dip stick just a full and min mark you can see tru.and i taught they called for atf fluid am i wrong mine needs to be top off also thanks.
I would be safe and use power steering fluid. As long as it has some type of full/min markings that you can see, make sure it's in between those two marks.

thanks for this guys.

so I topped up a little, but wasn't too low, didn't want to put too much in was dark so i'll get the levels perfect tomorrow.

still makes the noise. just sounds like a noisey bearing, or like somethings rubbing. it's like a 'sheeeeeeeze' noise, not too loud but noticeable.

i've read a lot of people moaning about noisey power steering (mustang owners) online. so i'm hoping it's quite common.

if it gives out or gets worse i'll get it all replaced but for now I think it's ok.

i'm wondering if lubing up my pullet might help, or could it be the belt? does the belt turn when not steering?

this is a ford problem, not just for mustangs, i believe its the bearings in the pump that make the noise.

The mustang problem is that there's 2 steering hoses that are rubbing and and later on all the fluid drops:eek:, and the person has to drive the car like that to take it to a shop or house and theres when the pump fails.:yakyak: you need a new steering pump.

It is a problem on most Ford vehicles. The power steering has always been ungodly loud on them, especially Mustang's. I have had my Mustang for 80000 miles now and it still makes the same ps noise as it did when I first bought it. You will be able to tell when the ps starts to go out, believe me. :hihi:

i've had that happen before. when that happens, the noise gets real REAL loud until it sounds like a motorcyle or a riceburner, and then the p/s pump just quits completely. you have to replace the leaking line asap, or you'll ruin the pump by running it dry. i replaced the line and didnt damage my pump luckily.

Mine is noisy but it works fine. It is a known issue, but replacing the pump may or may not fix it, even new ones from Ford can be just as loud as the one your replacing.

As long as it works, and the fluid is full I wouldn't worry about it. The modular Fords don't have this issue because they use a different pump design which is no where near as loud.

I didn't got that lucky but it doesn't make a loud loud sound, but i drove 30 miles and i didin't know i was dropping it. but oh well **** happens.:gringreen

Thanks guys. My mustang is sweet oinly $6500 with cobra kit, cobra seats / wheel, 50k on the clock, so I hear the noise and think FACK. It seems a bit ****** to hear it, but then again i'm a bit of a ponse when it comes to noisey bits main thing is there is nothing wrong.

Many thanks for the help :)

ya i have a 2001 mustang and it makes the same noise, im not sure what year yours is but mine requires ATF fluid not powersteering fluid so i would look into that for your year

Lucas makes a product, i found it at walmart for 10 bucks. Replaces some of the fluid and they say it will remove the noise. I tried it im my sons. It did not remove it but it sure dropped the noise down.
