Was a solution ever found to this problem?
Hello jlawrence613,

If you’re experiencing this issue, I recommend bringing it in to your dealer and speaking to your service manager about it. He is in the best position to look into this for you and can check into any warranty, assistance, recalls, or customer satisfaction programs that may apply to your vehicle.

Also, remember repairs done at a Ford Dealer come with a 24 months/unlimited miles warranty. You can schedule an appointment online here.

I change my oil every 10k miles and the 70k change was the first time it did not start reminding me 500 miles or so ahead of time.

Changed oil and did not re-set as it was still at around 50% life and I was curious as to when it was planning on coming on. At 80k (20k since last reset), it finally came on .... changed the oil and re-set it.

I'm not taking my car in to pay the dealer to look at it as there is nothing else wrong. Personally I'm glad that anoying reminder goofed up and if it continues at every 20k miles it means I have to deal with it 1/2 as often. And when I say "deal with it", I mean getting out the manual, finding the page for re-setting it, reading the instructions, then doing it ... it is one of those stupid tasks I refuse to memorize, and don't do often enough to remember it otherwise !!

I run Mobil 1 and Purolator Pure One Filters ... also made a special adapter that allows me to use a full size FL-1A filter which has DOUBLE the filter media AND holds a 1/2 qt. more oil. I see no need to change my oil more often than 10k which I do in around 6 months time.

Mine is still stuck on 100%. After the last oil change I gave it one last shot and reset it. I don't care if it works or not but it is odd that even the manual percentage adjustment won't work.

Deysha,

Thanks for looking out, but I've been around the block a while. I've got 69k miles and modded all to hell. Its not worth it to go to the dealer for a small thing like this. If I still had warranty I'd get around to it. More of a minor annoyance than an issue.

Lol! Gotcha, jlawrence613. You’re very welcome!

Hi Blaster,

Did you get a chance to bring your ride at the dealer for diagnosis? Please send me your Mustang's year and odometer reading so I can look into this for you. :)

to me the thing just counts down milage from whatever you set it to, otherwise each mile changes the % requardless of highway or all city. Really useless.

My car is a 2011 with 112,000 kms on it. I am way past warranty and I don't plan on spending any money on this. I only posted this to see if anyone knew a quick fix to jump start it. Everything else with the car has been flawless.

Update!

Okay, so I never could get my IOLM to start working again. I didn't ever have a real need for it but I just bugged me that it's part of the car and not working. After the last oil change I deciced to look into it again and ran across this the other day in the 2011 Workshop Manual. So I think I'll look for a used IPC (instrument panel cluster) and swap it out. I'll let everyone know as soon as I do and what the results are.
***open it and ctrl+f search "oil life" (page 16)

"The ENGINE OIL CHANGE SOON or OIL
CHANGE REQUIRED message is
inoperative

(possible causes) IPC

NOTE:
If the oil life is not displayed in the SETUP
menu, carry out the PMI when the original
module is not available. Refer to Section
418-01.
Using the system check in the message
center, VERIFY that the oil life is between
0% and 5% for the ENGINE OIL CHANGE
SOON message or at 0% for the OIL
CHANGE REQUIRED message.
— If the oil life is between 0% and 5%
and the ENGINE OIL CHANGE
SOON message is inoperative,
INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to
Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) in this
section. TEST the system for normal
operation.
— If the oil life is at 0% and the OIL
CHANGE REQUIRED message is
inoperative, INSTALL a new IPC.
REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster
(IPC) in this section. TEST the system
for normal operation.
• If the oil life is not at the specified value, the
message center is operating correctly.
INFORM the customer how the message
center functions and how the oil life
messages are set."

IDK why but I never get notifications of replies or new post to this thread. What's up with that??? Anyone know how to check the setting for this?

Mine also stopped working right around 60k.... Coincidence that the powertrain warranty also stops at 60k, I think not.

I have owned many old cars with oil change reminders in the owners manual. none of those cars have ever suggested I change my oil. I think OEMs might intentionally disable these systems after a certain mileage. Stupid, but a trend is a trend.

Very old thread, I realize, but this just happened to me at my last oil change. 2012 V-6 manual transmission. Last oil change was at 68,555 miles in 4/18/22. I got it done at a Firestone service center since I run Pennzoil Platinum synthetic, and Firestone is one of the few places in Maryland suburbs that stock it. I change my oil about every 8.000 miles. I don't rely on the IOLM to tell me when to change the oil; I reset trip meter #2, and use that so I know when 8,000 miles rolls around. Still, I like having the monitor working as a backup in case I forget to check.

I spent a couple hours reading multiple places, and my conclusion is there is no decisive way to get this monitor working again. I'll check back here, but I'm certainly not going to pay to get this working again, as it doesn't affect functioning of the car. Engine is running great. Appreciate any feedback.

I dunno about intentional, mine is still working at 90K miles. 2013 GT.

This thread is probably about the best source of information on this that there is; and I assume you used the SEARCH to find this thread, and would have found any others too .... if I remember correctly, there was no answer on how to fix it

The factory program in the PCM or perhaps the cluster might have an error in it. An updated program from Ford might very well clear it up.
My other Ford with 159k on it works just fine. Unless the PCM detects particularly hard engine conditions most of the time the oil counter will count down to remind you to change the oil at around 10k miles. It will adapt to remind you at progressively lower miles the harder the engine is run. My daily gets driven hard in spurts but still reminds me right before 10k.
Since the Mustang shows you an actual % of oil life left there's clearly a programming error in something if it doesn't count down. Otherwise, it would have to be a communication issue between the PCM and the cluster but that should register a trouble code.

On my 2012, mine froze at around 90k, since then I have had about 10 times when the Guage cluster randomly goes spaz and resets the gauges while driving. This also cycles the steering control selection. The oil change this froze at 100% was done by me at a buddies garage. Only thing I did different was to drain the oil, remove the filter, bring the car back down and pour 2 quarts of oil in, then drain. We went to lunch and the pug was out, no filter for about an hour. New filter, 8qts oil, and reset to then get frozen. Never have found a cause, but I am wondering of it is related to the instrument cluster. The battery was disconnected since then for more than a week on 2 different occasions

Your issue is a little more extensive. You clearly have a communication or power/ground connection issue in the cluster or the wiring/connectors throughout the car somewhere. It could even be a main system power/ground problem. When that happens, I would immediately scan the car for any possible pending or stored trouble codes.

2014 3.7L. Mine stuck before 20k. Had it in to the dealer twice. They never could figure it out. All the sensors tested good. Wasn't a big deal because I wasn't using it, more curious about what it would say. My wife's Honda just tracks mileage and works every time. I do rely on that to tell her when to talk to me.

Same issue 2012 GT. Tried resetting multiple times. At 100k miles, probably stopped around 60k. I do have Oil Catch cans on both sides, wondering if that has anything to do with it. Its an annoyance but its easy to just change at intervals.
