I can't resist:
The difference between a 302 and a 302 boss is that the boss motor tells the regular motor what to do 🤣🤣

The New 302 Boss is a car for 2012-13 where the 302 AKA 5.0 is the motor in the GT Mustang and the F150.
The Boss 302 takes the Mustang GT's suspension and adds higher-rate coil springs, stiffer bushings, and a larger diameter rear stabilizer bar. The body is lowered 11 mm (0.433 in) up front and just 1 mm (0.039 in) in the rear to give it a more raked stance designed to recall the original.
There are also some changes to the Motor (pistons, rods, compression ratio, camshafts, valve springs, crankshaft-sensor trigger-wheel) to give it 24 more HP, Brembo brakes, Wheels/Tires, Suspension, Radiator, oil cooler, Intake Manifold, Engine Calibration (tune), and some other options that you can read up on if you google 2012 or 13 Boss

Just bough My 1st 2014 Ford Mustang 5.0 5.0L is an 302ci So what is A 302 boss
Welcome to the forums. Keeping the scope of your question confined to the difference between your 2014 5.0 and a 302 Boss engine, it amounts to 420 hp vs 440 hp. As far as cubic inches the 5.0L is a 302 as you pointed out yourself. What distinguishes the 302 Boss engine is the forged internals, cylinder heads, higher flowing intake manifold, cam shaft, to name a few.

And what might be of interest to you as well in regard to the modern 5.0L engine in the Mustang application, is that it comes in 3 Generations. Gen 1 2011 to 2014, Gen 2 2015 to 2017, and Gen 3 2018 to current. The horsepower between these three generations has stepped up and down as well. You might find interesting facts researching what design changes account for not only the differences in the generations, but the reason why there is different power ratings within gen 1 and 3. Give you something else to look at.

G1 Port Fuel Injection 2011 to 2012 412 hp. 2013 to 2014 420 hp
G2 Port Fuel Injection 2015 to 2017 435 hp
G3 Port Fuel and Direct Injection 2018 to 2021 460 hp. 2022 450 hp.

The Boss has been on the back burner for a time now. The HP ratings are now higher with the GT’s but doesn’t seem to make any iota as far as performance values. Independent suspension must of been a great advancement from solid axle , should of been done much earlier. Back end of my ‘67 remember how rear end would bobble around with curves and handling (oversized rear tires didn’t help things at all).

Now the Mustangs have this “PP” prefix which is new to me? Trying to emulate the Boss perhaps but think I’ll skip that option lol. Also the Boss was advertised as a turn-key track ready purchase. Yeah, a few have been doing just that. Still not sure if it costs THEM to race or sponsorship regs apply. Boss manifold is no longer “all that” & was it really ever, can’t say but cheap enough these days for conversion. Side pipes… got me there, why I bought car. See if I can catch photo, said enough for now….

This thread was talking about the engine used in the 2012-2013 Boss 302 Mustang (that engine was nick-named "Roadrunner" if I remember correctly).

The thread kind of took a left turn. We're primarily concerned with the differences with the 302 Boss Roadrunner vs 5.0L Coyote powered Mustangs.

Just bough My 1st 2014 Ford Mustang 5.0 5.0L is an 302ci So what is A 302 boss
I had a 2014 GT and for a time was looking at the Boss but didn't feel like paying the dealer markup they were getting for these limited production models. If I remember right from an engine standpoint the Boss 5.0 had a forged crank and connecting rods while the regular 5.0 made due with cast parts. It may have also had forged pistons. It also had a more free breathing intake manifold and although it had higher horsepower than the standard GT 5.0 it has slightly less torque. The heads were different and had larger valves to aid in breathing. It had a higher redline (7,500 if I remember right) and the hp peak was higher in the RPM range so it was designed more for racing than day trips. Most of these improvements were incorporated into the Gen 2 5.0 in 2015 so I'm glad I didn't spend the money then.

And I forgot most of that lol. Quad exhaust must be the 2 side pipes included.
