Excuse the ignorance of any of my questions (from here on out! ;) but there was no user manual when I bought my solid '99 used from a fellow about 3 years ago. ...

In any case, what are your oil recommendations for the best mileage & maintanance of the engine.? I recently moved & cannot recall what my long-time mechanic used. Thank you, kindly. ;)

since ur in cali id use some 30 weight if it gets cold like below 35ish get some 10w40 but ur cool with 10w30 and royal is synthetic and unless u have either just rebuilt or were usein it before (if u were usen it ur oil changle is like 100$) dont use it u will spring a leak 5w20 the viscosity is so low unless ur new its like runnin synthetic. so my suggestion is 10w40 im about 60000 miles so i use gtx u will need 6 quarts and a good filter i recoment k&n.. hope this helps. o and zmax is the shiiit cost a few buy is a great additive

Don't run anything thicker than 5w-30 in these engines or you will have issues due to tolerances being tighter than the old 5.0 engines.

Here is an electronic copy of your owner's manual. It specifies on pages 137, 183 and 215 to use 5w-30 motor oil. I have 120,000 miles on my 2000 Supercharged Mustang GT and have run Mobil 1 5w-30 with no issues on the original engine.

The oil cap in my 2000 GT also has "5w-30" written in yellow on it.

i use ford motocraft 5w20 and a motocraft filter in my 2002 procharged gt and i love it! its ford recomended, cheap, does a great job and stays clean. as long as u dont go heavier than a 5w30 and keep it changed every 3-5k and the oil level good its not going to matter the brand of oil it is really. all of them are good or they wouldnt be in business, pick the bottle thats ur fav color if u want and use it! the key isnt the brand, its the correct wieght, and keeping it clean and full.

+1 for grn00GT's post!! do NOT run a thicker oil than 5w-30!! any of you that feel we are wrong, go to the auto parts store and have them pull off a "timing chain tensioner" off the shelf and you go ahead and look at the tiny holes and oil jackets in it..:nono:

i fully reccommend going fully-synthetic 5w-30, i did and i can tell the difference between it and conventional oil...

and i have to disagree with p1sc02gt slightly, cuz as it dont matter what brand name (being like valvoline, mobil 1, castrol etc, you know names you have SEEN before...) but if you get crap like the cheapest oil on the walmart shelf, or midas oil, they just recycle used oil and call it good when they get the right viscosity from it:nono:

i vote either mobil1 or castrol syntec fully synthetic 5w-30 all the way...

Ford switched to a 5W20 recommendation in the early 2000's for ONE reason only, to give a slight fuel economy increase on the window sticker, SVT engineers and modular builders have done tear down tests with motors running 5W20 and 5W30 and the overall consensus was 5W30 is the optimum weight oil for a 4.6L Modular! I also read about a dozen reports from people who have sent their used oil to testing labs and the 5W20 showed more metal content than the slightly thicker viscosity. Another thing I found interesting is Every technician said the oil samples sent to them were changed too soon and suggest 4500-5000 mile intervals with full synthetic:bigthumbsup Guys 5W20 isn't gonna grenade your motor so No Worries BUT for the longest possible bearing life I recommend the latter!

i also did some research on this whole oil thing, and it turns out, that the oil that they require BMWs and Audi's to run is a 0W-30 or 0W-40, and it turns out that in very cold areas wehre ur starting your car in 0 degree weather, that 5w smokes a tiny bit (thru testing with clear valve covers, but im not sure if they used a ford 4.6, so im still stickin with 5w) but the 0W-30 does not smoke AT ALL when u first start it up in 0 degree weather... just a thought for those who drive their cars in the north pole hahaha:laugh:

as brutal said, and what i run myself, fullly synthetic 5w-30... and i vote castrol syntec or mobil 1:bigthumbsup

5w20 weight, NOTHING ELSE! I love Royal Purple, but amsoil and mobil 1 are also good. Use synthetci, but its very important not to change the weight, the oil galleys and passages are small in these motors and the top end can get starved for oil with heavier weights. Anything other than 5w20 is at your own risk.

My 99 calls for 5w20, never had a problem, 140k.
Where did you get the information on what oil for your 99? The 1999 manual I posted makes no mention of using any oil other than 5w-30. (Which surprises me as Ford used to post a temperature chart showing various weights to use in different temperature ranges)

A buddy of mine has a 99 GT and I have a 2000, both of our service manuals only specify to use a good quality 5w-30 oil.

Personally, I don't think running a good synthetic 5w-20 or 5w-30 will make much difference if changed on time and the levels are kept full.

Ford changed to 5w20 in 2001. It was strictly for CAFE numbers. You should run a good quality 5w30, either synthetic or non-synthetic. The main thing is to change it regularly as mentioned by others.

My 99 Cobra supplemental owners manual calls for 5W30!

Thank you for all your replies - I have read each & they have been helpful in navigating the rec oil, car care, etc.
I plugged into a Menieke, where they use a 530 "Synthetic-blend" oil. Should I go for it.? (They have a $19.00 promotion going now, which got me in the door but for $29.99, will top off fluids, 15 "point check" etc.)

I have moved and now live in NC temperatures as low as the 30's (and often below in the winters). Would this change my oil choice? (I know it has been mentioned before regarding weather temps). Any other input you all will have would certainly be helpful. Again, thank you!
