Part 1:

So ive been noticing the foam braking down on the outside wing of the bottom seat cushion for a while and it was time to replace it before the seat cover goes bad. I got the foam from tousley ford online, about $68+ shipping.(1)

remove the 2 bolts at the frt of the seat, the push the seat forward and the covers will pull back to expose the back 2 bolts.(2) There are a couple connectors under the seat to unplug and pull the seat out of the car.(3)

To remove the trim panel, on the large handle, there is a pry slot to remove the cap (4) and a couple torx bots inside.(5) Look up under the cover at the small handle and you will see a wire clip.(6) Just pull it off with some needle nose pliars and the handle pulls off.(7) There is also a screw in the back corner to remove.(8) Looking again under the side panel you can see there are a couple metal clips that pop out, and up in the back corner is a plastc button with a v notch that you need to push the panel up and off. ( mine broke off)

With the trim panel off you`ll see the 2 bolts on the outside to remove,(9) and on the inside of the seat you`ll find 1 bolt hidden under the carpeted part of the bottom cover (10)-( 2 bolts on each side) and the back of the seat will come off the bottom.

Part 2:

Now you can start removing the plastic clips that hold the cover on the frame. (11) The sides just clip onto rods, but the frt and rear are a little tougher to do. The cover has velcro that just peels off easy (12) then you`ll find the 3 hog rings.(13) I highly recommend buying hog ring pliars and some rings for this. To remove the hog rings, just grab them with some side cutters and give them a twist (14) and they can be unhooked from the rod and cover. (15) There is a pocket in the bottom side cover carpet on the back inside corner that just fits over a metal tab and the cover is off.

Lift off the foam and set the new foam in place. Re-install the cover in the reverse order. Push the velcro down into the grooves good. That frt cover clip is tricky, its tight and it kinda folds over to clip into place. Slip the side cover plastic clips on the rods and load the hog ring pliars, (16) set it over the 2 rods and squeeze.(17) Once the cover is on, reinstall the seat back with the bolts, the outside bolt goes through the seat cover ( between the levers). Reinstall the trim panel by clipping it back on, then install the large lever.
Small handle note: Put the wire clip back onto the small handle first, then just snap it back on.(18)

This not only saves the seat cover but feels like a brand new seat again and that outside wing feels stout too. :)

this should really help me out. All problems with my car seem to be in the drivers seat. My lumbar support shorts out, the side padding on the top cushion is ruined (didn't know you could order a new cushion) and the leather on the left side leather is all worn out from getting in and out.
Is it possible to replace a piece of leather?

Great write up Mike. :bigthumbsup I'm sure they'll all need this at some point.
thanks man. ya, alot of the 05`s are getting up in miles. its a maint thing that people dont think about, but its not that expensive and not a bad diy project. it makes a old seat feel like new. some of the guys on here have done this already, but i thought i would make a how too for others. took about a hour or so to do it, and that was taking pics along the way. plus i had marcy holding stuff a little too, which made it go better cause shes a top notch installer :gringreen

the power seats would be a little different with the wires, but its a general idea. as always, careful attention while removing is the key

yes, a upholstery shop can replace seat panels. if you call toulsley ford they can tell you if you can get the back foam and the part numbers. the numbers are on the foam in my install and pic is the one for the basic seat, the power seat would be different. you want the online price too:)

Very good write up, I’ve always wanted to re-trim my driver’s seat but can anyone tell us how to remove the electronic seats without the risk of the dashboard exploding?

PS; Ford as comfy as your American seats are, they are too wide for skinny Europeans :shigrin, I slide around so much in my leather seats I have to wedge myself into one side of the seat on the track (despite being 6.3ft).

Is this a joke or is there actually something airbag related in the seat?

sure there is. some have side airbags, and theres a bladder in the pass seat for the airbag. its always a good practice to dis-connect the battery working in those areas and wait a little while.

so only on models with side airbags then?

well, if you look in any manual, for just about every job, it will say to do that before you mess with anything near the srs sytem like the seats. with that said, i didnt disconnect mine to do the drivers seat, i dont have side bags, but i think its a safe thing to do. when i re covered all my seats, i did. better safe than sorry (or dead) :nono:

I had read somewhere that unplugging the connections beneath either the drivers or passengers seats even with the battery disconnected can cause the airbags to go off (which is what I meant by the dashboard exploding). My 2005 V6 seems to have airbags on the pillars and the dash so I don't fancy accidently triggering them by fiddling with the seat cables.
I had wondered if anyone knew the correct way to disarm the airbag system, not just unplugging the battery. :smartass:

to dis arm the system, disconnect the neg battery cable,(make sure it cant touch the battery if it moves) wait at least 2 minutes for the back up power supply to be deleted. the backup power comes from a capacitor. during the 2 minutes, the airbags could still deploy.

no pillar airbags. in the steering wheel, and the panel above the glove box, and sides of seats ( if you have those, but didnt come in the 05)

i think what you might be thinking about is if your replacing airbags or the pre tentioners in the seat belts, there is a process to dis arm and re arm.
