Hi i'm new to the forum and I have a 97 v6 mustang. Here is the problem i'm having with my transmission (Auto). My car is stock I put it into drive and accelerate and it would not change to the next gear the rpm went up to 3500. I pulled over, put the car in to Neutral and then back to drive and the gears changed normally. It happened again the next morning and again I put it in to neutral and then to drive and all is well. Can anyone help me out and tell me what the problem may be and how to resolve it. Also, the problem has only happened just those 2 times, the car has 152,000 KM. Thanks.

There are several things it could be, but lets start with the least expensive. When was the last time the ATF was flushed & filled? If you don't know or it has been several years, then that is not good. Bad ATF can cause tranny problems.

There are other people that know more about trannys than me, so read their advise as well.

you're definitely low on fluid, hopefully you haven't burned it out yet.

the car just free revved and never shifted into gear? or you never got the chance to let it. you may have a sticking valve in the valve body or a broken 1-2 accumulator spring torn accumulator piston seal, or a failed snapring on the intermediate clutch. either way you will have to drop the valve body or the whole thing. which you will have done pretty much a flush after you get it all put back together. make sure your fluid is not black. it should be clean bright red, or a little dark. black and burned is not good and its time for an over haul if thats the case.

Speaking of the tranny...About how often should we be flushing the tranny fluid? I have an auto too. Was just curious...

Every 40,000 miles.

Isn't the '95 tranny every 30,000 miles or 3yrs?

or is it 40,000 for old & new...

Could be the synthetics. They use semi-synth now . .. at least at the dealerships here, that's the recommendation.
