Hello, I have a 65 fastback I just bought. The transmission is a 4 speed with Reverse being over to the right and, down. I am trying to find out what kind it is and, year ect. Here is all the information I found on the case, Borg Warner, 13-52-066-939. There is also a tag on the transmission .On the tag I found, 39ZR-7003-A and, 13-52-204 12125 and in larger size, CO622. If anyone can help me identify this please. Thank you.

You'll get a much better response by posting in the Classics section with a more specific title such as "1965 Fastback- What Trans?" Pictures would also be very helpful. I've seen nearly as many Chevrolet engines and transmissions as Ford in these cars, so you'll probably need to get your post moved or to post in the Classics section with pictures.

Look in the door jam of the driver's door; there should be the Original Data Plate. It shows the original color, trim, date of manufacture, district sales office, rear axle, and transmission. Yours may not be there, may not be original, or may be right, so it'd be the first thing I'd check. It should also contain your VIN.

Try this: About.com: http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/students/Blommel/

Good luck and welcome to the site!

You have a T-5 5-Speed... Fifth gear is to the right and up!

The 13-52-066-939 is the tail housing and that number wasn't made until about 1992.
The 13-52-204 number on the tag is the REAL identifier.

This is a REPLACEMENT T-5 for an 85-89 Mustang V-8.
It has the updated gears found in the 92 and newer T-5's and is rated at 300 ft/lbs.

Gear ratios are 3.35, 1.99, 1.33, 1.00, 0.68

Oh, and the internal speedometer gear is the 7-tooth.

Hello Frank,

Welcome to AFM.

Your thread has already been moved to the Classic section.

Since it says Borg-Warner on the case it should be a B-W T-10 which was used in 65 & 66 Mustangs. However, there is a problem with the tag numbers you list. The 39ZR-7003-A number is not a valid Ford number. Although 7003 does mean transmission the number should be something like C5ZZ-7003-L which would be one of the T-10s used in 1965. Ford always uses a letter to start a part number which tells you what decade it was produced: C = 1960s. I also can't find any T-10 (Ford type 70.7) whose number ended with an 'A'.

The T-10 was first used in a '57 Corvette but went into a wide variety of early 4-speed cars. Ford used them occasionally since they couldn't turn out their own 4-speeds quick enough. They still used then in '66 Mustangs but there were so few of them that they didn't even mention them in the '66 shop manual.

OK, Stan provided a good reason for why your part number could end in an A. :) Its not a T-10 from 65-66.

Sounds like it is an E9ZR-7003-A for an '89 T-5. Even though the number is from '89 that number could have been reused as long as that style of transmission was still being produced.

Stan says it probably wasn't made until 1992. Going by how B-W date codes were stamped on the earlier T-10s, the CO622 number might well be the date code for this one: March 6, 1992, 2nd shift.

However, there is a problem with the tag numbers you list. The 39ZR-7003-A number is not a valid Ford number.
When I saw it I presumed it to actually be E9ZR which would be 1989 Mustang.
But Ford sometimes has some seemingly strange numbers.

I'm going from my head here, but this decoding is generally true:

E means 198x series, C-196x, D=197x, F=199x
9 means xxx9, or 1989
Z means Mustang
R ?

7003 just means manual transmission

A would be version A

Going further in the numbering...
I'm looking at a tag in my hand from a 2001 Mustang TR3650 that I'm working on.
It says 1R33-7003-AC

Since all transmissions are "7003" I gave up on the Ford numbering and always use the BW or Tremec numbering on the line above the Ford number.

This TR3650 says TCET-1265 and that tells me exactly what gears and features are inside!

An 'R' in the 4th position just means 'Manual Transmission' so its not very helpful since you can tell that by looking at it.

According to this site the Ford A, B, C... decade numbering system is only valid through 1997. They started a new system in 1998. 1R3... would be for a 2001 Mustang. Starting in 2010 (=A) each year gets the next letter so 2014 parts would start with the letter E. That gives them about another 20 years before they need to change it again.

Thanks everyone. The transmission is really hard to get into gear most of the time. It also does not have a 5th gear. I thought the same thing since all transmissions that I have seen with reverse to the right and, down were 5 speeds. I get so aggravated trying to drive this thing since It is so hard shifting through the gears, takes the fun away. I would like to replace it with a top loader 4 speed. But, its a shame to do that just because it shifts like crap.

I can PROMISE you that transmission left the factory with a fifth gear and the ratio was 0.68.

Occasionally people remove fifth gear for racing purposes. Does the lever move in that direction, but just doesn't engage a gear?

Generally when a T-5 is hard to shift, the clutch isn't fully releasing. Does the clutch engage really close to the floor? This would indicate a clutch adjustment is needed.

Thank you. You are right they used to race this mustang, so they must have removed 5th gear. Does anyone have a recommendation on where I can buy a 4 speed, that would be rebuilt more closer to the trans that would have came with the car when it was new? Does anyone offer a quality re-built 65 transmission. Reasonable. Thank you.

Many people are wanting to ditch their top loader and get a T-5 like you have except with all the gears present. It won't cost them all that much to get yours rebuilt and have fifth gear put back.

So, I'm saying you might find someone willing to do a swap with your kit for kit.
