Alright, so I'm driving to petsmart and I have the windshield defroster on because my windshield was starting to fog up. It was windy, and somewhere in the mid 50s. Once the windshield was clear, I turned off the windshield defroster and two to three seconds later, this huge (huge) crack just popped up out of nowhere. After being in shock over what I just saw happen, I tried to feel for a crack and I couldn't feel anything and when I got to the store, I tried feeling the outside and couldn't feel anything either so I would say the crack is literally IN the windshield itself. What do you think happened? It honestly wasn't even that cold, which is why I'm so confused. Is there anything I could even do?

damn sorry dude :(

idk if it could be repaired, but i always wondered, if we had to replace teh windshield, would we have to order one from ford to get that mustang design by the rear view mirror? (i really like that :) )

hope it gets sorted out asap

That crack is a doosey, haven't a clue how it could happen. I do remember many years ago it got below freezing one night and I had parked my car outside. Instead of scraping off the ice, I got the bright idea to pour warm water on it. Am much wiser now..

you had a chip in the windshield in the middle of the crack, the temperature change caused the chip to run.you can see the stress point in the picture (i circled it in yellow). that crack cannot be repaired you have to get a replacement windshield my friend. the reason you cant feel it is because its safety glass, the film imbedded in the glass is holding it tight.

this is one of the reasons to get chips filled soon if you catch them. the resin will prevent running most of the time.

if you have full coverage insurance, most policies have a seperate smaller deductible for glass replacement like 50-100 dollars. most full coverage insurance will fix chips for free as well. call your insurance and see what they can do for you.

buying the window with the mustang design on the glass winds up making it like 2-3x the cost of a simple window without the design, Ill skip the design if it ever happens to me

I have had many windshields replaced over the years. Even without using insurance it's probably 250 or less to replace. That's with them coming out to you and replacing on site.

I uses to have a TJ Jeep wrangler. Flat windhield, I went through 4 windshields in 9 yrs of having that thing haha. They were like 139$ installed lol cheapest ever.

Believe it or not, that mustang behind the rearview mirror is an extra $250, at least how much it was whenever my girlfriend got her windshield replaced. I think you would have to order one from Ford though.

Well hopefully geico will cover it! I do have full coverage so I think they should do it. I never did see a crack though.. At least not big enough anyway. But yeah that does make a lot of sense now that you say that. I was wondering why the part in the middle is black compared to the rest of the crack!

Would my insurance increase much as a result of going through insurance to replace it?

no your premium should not go up with glass replacement. it is comprehensive and not a collision claim.

I believe if you request factory glass, insurance companies are obligated to comply. There has been plenty of bad press over the years of insurance companies trying to short change policy holders by installing substandard parts. As far as your insurance goes, this is most likely to fall under the comprehensive portion of your policy. Some states require that glass be covered full i.e. no deductable.

Hmm.. My car got t-boned earlier this year and they had to replace the windshield. I don't think they used the OEM glass since the Mustang horse isn't there behind the rearview mirror. I don't care about the Mustang logo, but would this perhaps be a reason why my windshield cracked so easily this time? I know it mainly had to do with the temperature but it wasn't even that cold, just windy. My old windshield never cracked despite having a bullet-sized crack in my windshield and temperatures getting down to the 20-30s sometimes.

Since this thread is getting some attention I thought I'd ask you pros for some advice too.

I have more of what I'd call a scratch in the glass, not a chip. It's only 1/8" long and a fraction of that wide. In fact, it's almost exactly the same size as this symbol _

Anyway, is this something that a chip repair guy should fix or are scratches different? I'm asking here because I'm confident the glass repair person will just tell me to fix it. Which I'm ok with doing, just wanted to make sure I need it first.

I think it would depend on where it is, and whether it bothers you. I had a number of very small pits (way smaller than a chip) in my glass right in my line of vision. I had them filled so I wouldn't see them..

What you describe is a bit different. I don't think the chip repair process works as well for a scratch as it does a chip.

it will if the scratch is deep enough to feel with your fingernail. if not they use some kind of powder compound and "buff" it out. i thought the guy was full of kaka when he told me he was gonna buff a scratch out of glass but he dang sure did it....lol
