I have a 2006 Mustang GT and my abs and traction control lights are on on my dash. Ran a code reader and got the code(I unfortunately dont remember what the code was) either way it said it was my right rear wheel speed sensor. It looks fine, conections are good and the code won't clear. So I'm thinking of replacing it because it's cheaper than taking it to the dealer for them to tell me what I already know. But has anyone else had this problem and did replacing it help? Any info. would be appreciated! :) any questions feel free to ask! Thanks!

Awesome,Thanks guys! I think I'm gonna order a sensor and try getting the one out without breaking it then maybe try swapping it with the left one. If it breaks I'll just replace it and not risk breaking two! haha!

Thanks again! :)

2006 GT Wheel speed sensor problem

Hey there!
So I posted a thread previously about this problem... My abs and traction control lights are stuck on and I ran the code, came up as C1165 (Rear Right Anti lock brake sensor input circuit failure.) So I bought a new wheel speed sensor and replaced the right rear sensor and the code still wont clear... anyone else have this problem?? or know how to fix it? :mesad: It doesnt seem to affect my cars handling at all as I've been driving it for a while now like that but I would like to figure it out. My next option was to put the old sensor on the left side and see if the code changes or goes away... if that doesnt work I'm not sure what the next option would be. Could it be the wiring the sensor plugs into? if thats so does anyone know where I should look or have pictures of how to fix/replace that? Any help and ideas are much appreciated!

:wavey

ps. the dealership even said it was the right rear sensor and it needed to be replaced... I didnt want them to check but they did and only confirmed what I knew already. Still didnt solve the problem though.

Is it a wire coming from it?

Also, try and clean the sensor contact areas with something

It has a wire attached to it yes :S

and the sensor doesnt contact anything... And its new so it shouldnt be dirty anyway.

Still need some more answers. Gunna rip it apart again tonight and see what I can find. I'm thinking it might be a wiring problem but who knows. if anyone does let me know! haha

Did you disconnect the battery for 10-20 minutes after installing the new sensor to clear the codes?

=Vic=
No I didnt, didnt think that would help or work but I'll try it right now. figured if it was fixed the code would go away, no? I'll let ya know if it works or not but if it doesnt then what? I switched the sensor out on the left side lastnight with the old one that I changed out from the right side. no code change which leaves me to believe I changed a 50 dollar sensor for no reason. as if it was faulty the left side code would have shown up. So it must be a wiring problem.

If this is the case, does anyone have or know where I can get a wiring diagram?? Any other info? haha! this is such a pain in the butt... but I know the dealer would be charging me out the butt for everything I've tried already so its worth it so far.

I appreciate all the ideas! keep em coming! I'm determined to figure this one out.

ok.
Update:
Just went out and hooked up the battery again. Ran the code reader again and now 2 codes came up! c1165 (Rear Right Anti lock brake sensor input circuit failure.) and c1175 (Rear Left Anti lock brake sensor input circuit failure.) Erased the codes and the new c1175 went away but the c1165 is still there.

Definately confused now. did it come up cause I pulled in the old one on the left side yesterday? wouldnt that have come up when it plugged in?????
Why is this so complicated?!
Somethings going on there...
I think its going to the dealership... gunna have to wait though.

Help too!

I am having the same problem too with my 06 GT! Just took it to shop and replaced the RRW Sensor... and they too couldn't clear the codes! Ugh, what a pain!

But I didn't know that the TCS is part of ABS... I have a custom tune on that disables the TCS, would that affect my ABS as well causing the code to come up still if the new sensor is good? Going to take it back this weekend for him to check wiring, but if you figured out your problem, please let me know asap! Thanks!

UPDATE::
I'm apparently not the only person with this issue and this is what I found for those of you with the issue.

Turned out one of the wires on the car itself was broke that connected to the sensor. A buddy of mine and I hooked up a electrical current reader (probably not what its called exactly... haha) but when we hooked it to one of the two wires that connect the sensor to the car the current wasn't complete (the signal wasnt getting to the end of the wire where it would have been detected) so we started tracing the wire. Luckily the break was only about 3 inches away from where the sensor hook up was underneath the car by the wheel and not somewhere inside all the wiring in the car. A rock, or ice or something must have nicked it somehow and it corroded threw. We just fixed up the break and it was good to go! To bad I now have a 50 dollar sensor for no reason... (too bad I hadn't thought of checking the wire on the car first and not just assume the sensor or wire on the sensor was screwed....)
I hope this helps and that you can figure out your problem easier! Hope your problem is the same as mine, as it wasn't a difficult fix once we figured it out.

I have this exact same issue. 2006 GT. Right rear sensor code. Sensor replaced, still have lights. I will check the wire tonight and report back.

Perhaps some wire protection is in order, as this seems to be a trend.

Resolution:
I found the exact same issue as CandyWill. I pulled off the right rear wheel, unplugged the sensor, and stripped back the plastic wire sheath (on the vehicle side). I found a break in one of the two wires about 3-4 inches back from the plug. Stripped, soldered, and shrink tubed the wire. Problem solved. This seems to be a relatively common issue. If you are having sensor problems, check your wires before you buy a sensor. I wasted $90 on diagnostic and a sensor. Here is a picture of the broken wire:

I found a damaged wire 3 inches behind the harness in the right rear wheel well. Unplug the sensor, pull the female(car side) of the harness off its mount buy tugging on the little white plastic pin. Remove the electrical tape from the end of the wire sheath. Pull the wires out of the sheath through the split in it. You should find a broken wire. Mine was hard to see at first. Solder the wire back together and shrink tube it. Good to go. Once you have that repaired the ABS and TCS lights will go out within a few seconds of turning the key on. If they don't you still have an issue.

RuNEX81, your custom tune won't affect ABS. It is the equivalent of pushing the TCS button after startup.

I also have a 2006 mustang, although not the GT, and just had the same problem as Candywill & psibrad. The code was C1165 and I would have replaced the RR ASB wheel speed sensor, but luckily I found this thread first. I swapped the left & right rear sensors & instead of the code following a bad sensor, the code stayed on the right rear. I pulled the harness off the mount & pulled back the wire inside. I found the problem spot right away about 2 inches away from the harness. There was a piece of electrical tape around the wires right after the harness & as I pulled that off, the problem spot split in two. I patched it up and problem went away. Below is a link to a picture of where the problem was.

I'm very glad this thread has been helpful!! Sure seems to be a common problem, just the the 06's? and just on the right side? Werid. But I hope others find this as well before blowing $50-200 on diagnostics and a new sensor.

:bigthumbsupGotta love when you help others with a passion like ours! :gringreen

Thank you

I had this exact same issue with my 2006 GT. The lights came on two days ago, I googled the problem found this thread and fixed it in half an hour. You guys are a lifesaver, thanks CandyWill, psibrad, and GoCubbies45. The descriptions and photos were great.
