i bought a porting kit for $40 from summit and had my way with them in my basement..Standard Abrasives 260001 - Standard Abrasives Deluxe Porting Kits – SummitRacing.com
the kit had very detailed instructions..i just took my time and was super careful, they turned out great, but like 89coupe said, you have to be careful for sure

heres a link to the same instructions that came with the kit:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PDFs/Head%20Porting%20DIY%20by%20Standard%20Abrasives.pdf

as for the heads/headers,depending on what year explorer,it could have either GT40 or GT40P heads..the GT40 heads DO NOT require any special headers,to ID them, they have "GT" stamped all over them

the GT40P heads have "GTP" stamped on them..they dont require "special" headers, per se,but they do require "certain" headers..BBK shortys have been known to fit,you have to use plug wires with 90* boots on the end
also:
Mac 1-5/8 longtubes w/90*plug wires
FRPP shorty's
Mac P specific shorty's
and BBK's longtubes have been said to work,with 90* wires,but i forget what size primary tube..either 1-5/8 or 1-3/4..

thanks pretty sure they are gt40p cuz they came out of a 98

i got some pics in my gallery of my ported gtp heads and intake. intake is pretty easy to gasket match port,i did mine to 1250in./1415ex. fel-pro gaskets, heads are a little harder/time consuming, but the good news is ,,the material in the p-heads are alot better than e7's :bigthumbsup

yes they fit..you'll gain roughly 10-15 HP at the rear wheels on an otherwise stock motor
thanks need4spd90-i am still learing the compatibility of parts and what not between 87-93's and the four eye foxes.

Does anybody know how to get ahold of tmoss? I was wanting to talk to him about the explorer intake. Does it have shorter runners than the stock HO intake? Will it raise the rpm peak any? And what kind of cfm's does it flow?

Yes it will raise the peak rpm, usually in the 250-500 rpm area. They flow about 200-210 cfm in stock form. The combo of GT-40 heads, Cobra/GT-40/Explorer intake and stock cam makes peak power at 5400 rpms in most cases.

Whats the difference between the GT40 and the GT40P heads and intakes??

Intake are relatively the same.

Heads have different size exhaust valves. Different plug angle( for the P's) and supposedly the casting of the P's are slightly better. IIRC the combustion chamber CC is different also. I could be wrong though

right on

earlier intakes have the EGR hole and a spot on the #5 runner with a little extra "meat" for drillign/tapping the act sensor, thats the only difference there

everything you said about the heads rings true to me..

the p heads actually flow a little better, but everyone is scared of them cuz they have to buy new headers,or so they think..the most popular of all headers,BBK shorties are known to fit with 90* boots..they're like $150 or so brand new

people end up paying 2x as much for a set of used standard style GT40 heads compared to the GT40P heads, when they could score the P heads AND a new set of headers for the same price as the standard GT40's..i just sold a set of standard explorer GT40's on ebay last nite..they went for an unbelieveable $415 + shipping (i still dont believe it myself lol)

P heads go for around $200+ shipping for the most part..you tell me which makes more sense lol

an important point about the heads is that the GT-40 comes with a larger combustion chamber than the ET7E so to keep the same compression ratio you need to milled, in the other hand if you install a set of GT-40p heads in a stock 5.0 you will raise the compression ratio from 9:1 to 9.5:1 because of the smallest chambers and if you cu it or milled to 30 mm you will get a closest 10:1 compression ratio.

How would these 3 Ford intakes compare against the Edelbrock Performer or Trick Flow Street intakes in terms of performance?

what i see, is that the explorer cobra or GT-40 intake have an a range between the 1500 to 5500, and i think the range of work in the edelbrock is 2500 to 6500, if you have an a stok engine or little modify, then the edelbrock it seems to be a litle to much for the aplication, besides, the ford intakes is a cheap and good option to get more horsepower

Lordy, where were you when the pine tree fell on my 88LX?

LOL, those P heads were a sweet deal for somebody.
:laugh::laugh:

Guess what, that was shipping costs. Could have at least funded soem valve train parts or something, But NOOOO, I had to give them away.:headscratch:

Its all fine and dandy, Im all for helping someone out. If if I lose money in the Process. Just wont be much Money.:laugh:
